Course Description

Program Description The Secondary Teacher Education Program at Bishop’s University is a two step program leading to two degrees, a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or a Bachelor of Sciences (B.Sc.) with a Double Major (Education and a teaching discipline) and a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) This combination of degrees is required in order to be eligible for a Quebec teaching permit or “brevet d’enseignement.” This degree only certifies you to teach in the province of Quebec. If you are planning to teach in another province, it is your responsibility to contact the Ministry of Education in that province to see what additional courses are required to certify you to teach in their province. In today’s knowledge-based economy, a strong background in mathematics open doors to many careers. A math major shows future employers that a candidate has good analytical thinking and problem-solving skills. Our recent graduates have found jobs in actuarial sciences, computer science, economics and statistics, among other fields. Graduates from our double majors programs have also found jobs in areas other than mathematics such as biology, music, drama, with the math major bringing added value to the student’s degree. Mathematics is the language of the sciences, a language which allows scientists to quantify, model, understand and predict behaviour in an enormously diverse range of phenomena of interest. Simultaneously, Mathematics is often regarded as an art, as it is the creative study of patterns and of problem solving. Mathematics covers a wide range of disciplines including algebra, analysis, combinatorics and discrete mathematics, and differential equations. In first-year courses, mathematics students are joined by other science students, particularly from Physics and Computer Science. In the advanced courses, classes are very small, and some are given on an individual or tutorial basis.
